DELANO, Calif. (KMPH) -

A riot in a Kern County prison on Thursday ended with 10 inmates being taken to local hospitals.

Staff at Kern Valley State Prison in Delano, about 32 miles north of Bakersfield, had to quickly contain a prison riot that began around 9:51 a.m., according to reports from prison officials.

According to reports, several fights broke out among groups of inmates in the prison's maximum-security yard.

Correctional officers used pepper spray, chemical agents and direct-impact rounds to quell the incident, officials said.
