Upshaw Suspended Again; Moore Earns Defensive POY

Posted: Updated:

For the second time in just over a month, Fresno State freshman center, Robert Upshaw, is suspended from the basketball team for violating athletic department policy. In February it was for three games, this time it is indefinitely. The Memorial grad will definitely not play in this week's Mountain West Conference tournament. Upshaw averages right around four points and four rebounds in 22 games played this season.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Fresno State had four players selected to the 2012-13 All-Mountain West Women's Basketball teams and junior guard Ki-Ki Moore was named the MW Defensive Player of the Year, as the conference announced the end-of-the-season awards that were voted on by the nine league head coaches.

Moore was also voted First-Team All-Mountain West this year after finishing tied for second in scoring with 17.4 points along with 6.3 rebounds per conference game. She led the league with 89 steals overall on the year - 12 more than any other player - and ranked 17th nationally with 3.1 steals per game. She joins Jaleesa Ross (2009-10) as the only players in school history to be named the conference Defensive Player of the Year.

"I'd like to first thank my teammates for the success I have encountered this season because none of this would be possible without them," Moore said. "The belief and trust that they continued to show me every game, I just felt like I owed it to them.

"Coming into a new conference this year with talent stepping on the floor every night, I just felt consistency was a big goal of mine this year as well as our team and I just think that played a big part in the success we had this year."

Senior guard Rosie Moult was selected to the All-Mountain West second-team and sophomore forward Alex Sheedy and junior guard Taylor Thompson were both pegged to the third-team.

Moult joined Moore on the 2012-13 Mountain West All-Defensive Team, as the Bulldogs and San Diego State were the only two teams in the MW to have two players selected to the six-member All-Defensive Team.

Fresno State's four all-conference selections tied with SDSU and Wyoming for the most in the conference.

Aztec senior guard Chelsea Hopkins was named the 2012-13 MW Women's Basketball Player of the Year and SDSU's Beth Burns was voted as the Coach of the Year.

UNLV's Rejane Verin was selected as the Freshman of the Year, Boise State's Brandi Henton was the Newcomer of the Year and New Mexico's Antiesha Brown was the Sixth Player of the Year.

The Bulldogs depart Fresno on Tuesday to head to the 2013 Reese's Mountain West Basketball Championship being played at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. Fresno State, the two-seed at the tournament, is set to face seventh-seed Boise State on Thursday, March 14 at 6 p.m.
