Posted: Updated:
MADERA COUNTY, Calif. (KMPH) -

A popular Madera County rest stop for those traveling to the foothills became the scene of a break in, and it was caught on camera.

The driver of a stolen Chrysler Pacifica put the car into reverse and rammed into the front doors of a gas station on Highway 41, known as the 22-Mile House.

Cameras first caught the driver of the stolen car trying to pry open the door, but when he couldn't, he left. He then came back and tried again this time with the car.

Madera County deputies spotted the stolen car nearly 24 hours later.

Deputies tried to pull it over, but the driver took off.

The driver finally gave up after a leading deputies on a 5-mile chase.

Deputies arrested 37-year-old Michael Phelps, 32-year-old Alonzo Ramos Junior, and 39-year-old Monika Fernandes.

However, the driver, deputies say 23-year-old Abel Ramos got away.

Tari Singh's family owns the gas station.

Singh said he saw Ramos walking into the store the day of the break in.

"He came in that same day. He had only a half T-shirt. I could see his tattoos, and he was just looking around at ATM machine," Singh said.

Customers who use the popular foothill rest stop couldn't believe that the store had been robbed again.

This is the third break in the past few years, Singh said.

"It raises prices and it hurts us, so you're just not robbing them, you are robbing everybody," said Tracey Anthonijsz, a customer.

Deputies are looking for Ramos.

He is described as 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighs about 165 pounds. He has several tattoos including one across his chest that reads, "Daddy's Girl Aranice Alyssa." He has another that reads, "Madera" on the back of his arm. And, he has a forearm tattoo with the phrase, "I refuse to lose."

Anyone with information should to call Crime stoppers at 498-STOP. That tip could be worth up to one thousand dollars in cash.
