Among the hundreds of people who were gathered at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C. was Diana Rambo.
Rambo, of Fresno, has distant familial ties to one of the sailors who died at sea.
She is believed to be an ancestor of Jacob Nicklis, who may have been one of two skeletons that was recovered from the USS Monitor's turret more than a decade ago.
Rambo's mother provided a DNA sample to the Navy in 2010, but there was no
positive identification.
In a Feb. 22 interview with KMPH, Rambo said that she was honored to be in attendance for the ceremony.
"It's very, very touching," Rambo told KMPH. "Not that we knew the relative but
just thinking about these young men that were in the civil war and what
an impact this ship had on naval warfare."
