Texting Suspected In Crash That Killed Chowchilla Man

CHOWCHILLA, Calif. (KMPH) -

UPDATE: Officials have identified a man who died in a car crash near Fairmead late Wednesday afternoon.

Carlos Rodriquez Castellon, 27, of Chowchilla died in a fatal car crash when he lost control of the car he was driving and it veered into a parked car, the California Highway Patrol said.

The CHP suspects that the man may have been composing a text message on his cell phone at the time of the car crash. CHP also said that open alcohol containers and drug paraphernalia was found in the man's car.

Original: A 27-year-old man was killed in a car crash in Chowchilla Wednesday afternoon, the California Highway Patrol said.

The man was driving at approximately 40 miles per hour westbound on Maple Street, just east of Yates Avenue around 3:15 p.m.

That's when the man, whose name has been withheld pending notification of his next of kin, lost control of his car and veered into the left rear side of a parked car, the CHP said.

Although the man was wearing a seatbelt, he suffered major trauma from the steering wheel.

An air ambulance was called to transport the man to a nearby hospital, but he died before he could be loaded onto the helicopter, the CHP said.

The CHP suspects that the man may have been composing a text message on his cell phone at the time of the car crash. CHP also said that open alcohol containers and drug paraphernalia was found in the man's car.

The crash is currently under investigation.
