Workers Union Offers Paid Surfing Trip For Kai, The Hatchet-Wielding Hitchhiker

Posted:

The outpouring of support for Kai, the hatchet-wielding hitchhiker, has been amazing over the past month.

People from all over the world have been reaching out to try and give back to Kai -- a man that many view as a hero.

Now, the union that Rayshawn Neely, the targeted PG&E worker belongs to, is getting in on the generosity.

There were many people involved in the rescue of Rayshawn Neely on Feb.1, but in society's eyes, only one of them began this journey with nothing and risked everything to save him.

That's why people continue to reach out to Kai. And the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers is the most recent, and they've offered up a gnarly trip.

"We decided we need to do something to honor Kai," says Chris Habecker, I.B.E.W.'s executive board secretary.

Jimmy Kimmel already took care of Kai's mini–mile and wetsuit wish.

As for mavericks, that'll have to wait. But the IBEW is offering up something just as amazing.

"Since he loves surfing so much, we want to give him a surfing weekend. All expenses paid by the Union," says Habecker.

And they are sparing no expense: a two-night stay at the Del Mar Hotel in San Diego, all his travel and meal expenses paid for, as well as a little spending cash to get him by down in SoCal.

"We had to do something to recognize him. His act of heroism, courage, and what he did, touched all of us."

The trip isn't the only thing that the IBEW hopes to come out of this: they also want to reunite Kai and Neely.

"We have so many members that we represent, they put their lives on the line everyday. It goes to your heart what happened. That somebody, intentionally, went after one of our members, and this man, stepped up and saved his life."

The IBEW is also honoring seven of Rayshawn's PG&E co–workers for their heroic acts on Feb. 1.

The union has nominated them for the National Life Saving award.

Whether or not Kai is around and available to make the reunion happen, and accept the surf trip, is beyond our control.

Of course, we'll do everything we can to make it happen, but the home free hitchhiking lifestyle is unpredictable to say the least.

But for the IBEW to reach out like this, is a fantastic story all in itself.
