Neighbors to the Rescue! Woman Survives House Fire in Tranquility

Posted: Updated:

A lady in Tranquility can now consider her neighbors, her heroes.

Just before 3:30 a.m. Sandra Littlefield says she stepped out of her home—and spotted flames down the street.

"I knew the lady that lived there. I came running from three blocks away and she was asleep," says Littlefield.

Other neighbors also saw the flames across the rooftop, and came to help.

Some called 911. Others banged on windows and doors, but couldn't break their way in.

"She had everything barricaded," Littlefield says.

Within three minutes, Fresno County Firefighters arrived.

Neighbors told them the lady was trapped.

Immediately, crews went into rescue mode and were able to break in.

"The smoke had filled the house to just above their knees," says Fresno County Fire Spokesman Ryan Michaels. "Our Engineer could hear the cries for help. He found her disoriented and crying out for help within her room. He took control of her and guided her out of the house to safety."

The lady was okay.

However, one of her pet birds did not survive.

Firefighters say the lady did not have a working smoke detector.

Once the flames were out, her neighbors watched as different items were pulled out of the home.

"Lucky we got her out," said Littlefield.

Firefighters said electrical problem started the fire.
