FRESNO, Calif. --- The Fresno State men's basketball team once again played quality defense, but continued to struggle on the offensive end of the floor in a 58-51 loss to the UC Irvine Anteaters on Saturday night at the Save Mart Center.
Fresno State junior shooting guard Kevin Olekaibe became the 29th Bulldog to join the 1,000-point club with 10 points - all in the first half.
Allen Huddleston added 12 points for the Bulldogs, but the Anteaters scored the game's final 12 points behind a strong second-half effort from UCI senior Daman Starring, who helped seal the UC Irvine's first road win of the season.
The 'Dogs led 23-19 at halftime and extended the lead to 10 in the first five minutes of the second half, but as a team shot just 25.5 percent from the field and was 3 of 16 from behind the 3-point arc in dropping their third consecutive contest.
The Anteaters battled back by going on a 22-12 run capped by a pair of free throws by Daman Starring to tie it at 44 with 5:38 remaining.
After Alex Young tied it at 51 with a jumper, Starring took over, hitting a jumper and a pair of free throws to put UC Irvine out front for good.
Will Davis II scored only six points for the Anteaters (5-6), but grabbed 15 rebounds.
Fresno State (5-6) will wrap up the fall semester this week with finals before returning to action next Saturday at UCLA on the hardwood of the new Pauley Pavilion. Tip off is slated for 8 p.m. PT and the game will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Networks.
