1 Dead, 1 Hurt After Being Struck By Train In Fresno

FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

Police say one person is dead and another hurt after being struck by a freight train in Central Fresno.

It happened around 4 p.m. Wednesday on the tracks near Van Ness and Shields.

According to Fresno Police, a man and woman were walking toward the tracks as the train was going southbound at approximately 50 to 60 miles per hour. Police say the train hit the two people before they were able to get out of the way.

The woman -- believed to be in her 30s -- was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man -- believed to be in his 40s -- was taken to Community Regional Medical Center after suffering a possible broken hip.

Police say they will not release their names until family can be contacted.

Several intersections in the area were closed because of the accident but have since reopened.
