Sanger honored its veterans with a parade in the downtown area. The theme was simple and heartfelt; "Honoring Our Veterans".
The start of the parade was as patriotic as you can get. It featured a huge American flag flapping in the wind courtesy of two fire department ladder trucks.
Lexii Marquez of Sanger got the parade moving with our national anthem. She called it a special moment. "It's a big honor especially because my dad's a veteran so it's really from the heart."
The Veteran's parade featured a who's who of Sanger people. The Sanger High Navy Junior ROTC marched, while the Apache marching band tooted their horns.
Former Navy First Class Petty Officer Ada Fisher was the grand marshal of the second annual Veteran's Parade. She served during World War Two and the Korean War.
Local veterans like Dewain Bolin of the Sanger AmVets enjoyed their day. "We're enhanced by the community. When the community shows up and they show their patriotism and honor the veterans it enhances us to honor them as a community and help them survive as well as they help us."
It was a flag waving event that drew a big crowd. KMPH News anchor Monty Torres made his entry in a classic. The event coordinator Eli Cruz called it a great day. "It is actually a really good feeling to put something on like this because it's honoring our veterans. It's all about our veterans here in Sanger or anywhere. It's a good feeling knowing this can be done to recognize them."
The Sanger Veterans' Park group has plans to create a Veterans facility that includes a museum, chapel and memorial walls.
