MADERA COUNTY, Calif. (KMPH) -

The Madera County Coroner's Office has identified the Bakersfield veteran hit and killed while working on a trench crew.

CHP investigators say 25-year-old James Chvala Jr. was digging trenches on Avenue 9 near Road 35 Wednesday morning when he walked across the road to grab a shovel. He was trying to cross back when he was hit and killed by an oncoming car.

Investigators say the driver of the car swerved to try to miss him but was not able to avoid him.

KMPH News has learned Chvala had only been on the job for a week. He had recently returned home from the army after serving two tours in Afghanistan.
