FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KMPH) -

The Fresno County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's help in finding the person who shot an off-duty deputy Tuesday afternoon.

Investigators say shortly before 1 p.m., the deputy was riding his bike on Friant Road, south of the town of Friant, when he heard a noise and felt something strike his back. He was knocked off his bike and realized he had been shot.

Sheriff's officials say the deputy looked up and saw a person in the back seat of an SUV pulling a rifle back inside the vehicle. They say two other people were inside the SUV.

The deputy called an ambulance. He was taken to Community Regional Medical Center but will be okay.

The vehicle involved in the shooting is described as a dark blue colored Chevy or GMC SUV. It was last seen driving northbound on Friant.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Fresno County Sheriff's Office at (559) 488-3111.
