FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -
A man wanted by the California Highway Patrol is behind bars after a more than 10-hour standoff in south Fresno.
The standoff started around noon Monday at a home near E Street & Los Angeles Street. It ended around 10:15 p.m. after a Fresno Police Department SWAT team threw flash-bang grenades into the home. Moments later, officers say they found Jose Avelos, a wanted parolee, in the basement of the home.
The CHP says Avelos was spotted in a stolen car about a week ago, and that he pointed a gun at officers. An investigation led the CHP's HEAT (Help Eliminate Auto Theft) Team to the home in south Fresno.
Once Avelos was in custody, an ambulance took him to Community Regional Medical Center to be treated for bite marks from a police dog.
The CHP says Avelos will be charged with brandishing a gun at a police officer, as well as driving a stolen car.
