FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

A search was launched Friday morning for an overdue backpacker in the Sierra.

The Fresno County Sheriff's Office says 52-year-old Matthew Hanson, of Visalia, started his backpacking trip in the Sierra on Tuesday, October 16 and was due back on Thursday, October 25.

His itinerary included the upper Kings River, Black Cap Basin and Martha Lake.

The sheriff's office says patrol units and search teams started looking for Hanson after it received a missing persons report just before 6 a.m. Friday. A fixed-wing aircraft was also brought in to help with the search.

Authorities say Hanson's vehicle was located on the east side of Courtright Reservoir.

Sheriff's officials say Hanson is a frequent backpacker and was well-prepared to the 10-day trip.
