FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

A hit and run accident left an 11-year-old boy fighting for his life.

It happened just after five Wednesday evening near the corner of San Pablo and Belmont in central Fresno.

11-year-old Anthony Hernandez, a 6th grader at Valley Arts and Science Academy was on his way home, when he was hit and then dragged several feet by the driver of a pickup truck.

The truck was filled with lawn care equipment.

Witnesses say the driver stuck around for a few minutes and then took off running.

The grandfather of the boy, James Gonzales says, "Running away like he did was a sign of a coward, leaving an 11-year-old kid in the middle of the street."

Hernandez was immediately rushed to the hospital.

James Gonzales says, "He was bleeding from the inside of his mouth, his lips were swollen and his eyes were shut, whole right side maybe some broken ribs, we don't know yet. But he's hurting."

Officers searched the neighborhood, but the driver was long gone.

Now cops say whoever he is, he's facing felony hit-and-run charges.

Crime scene investigators dusted the truck for prints, but officers also found some work orders inside the vehicle.

Officers now plan to go back to the company to see who was driving the car at the time of the accident.

Anthony's grandfather has this message for the driver.

James Gonzales says, "If you're out there listening please don't forget what you've done. This could happen to your child, we forgive you and now it's up to you to forgive yourself, and turn yourself in."
