FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

After six years as Fresno's City Attorney, James Sanchez has tendered his resignation to allow him to pursue an opportunity as City Attorney for the City of Sacramento, the City of Fresno said in a written statement Wednesday.

Sanchez began his career with the City of Fresno in 1984 as a Deputy City Attorney and from 1997 to 2002 served as Salinas City Attorney before returning to Fresno. In 2006, he was promoted to City Attorney upon the retirement of former City Attorney Hilda Cantu Montoy, the statement read.

"It has been a privilege to have served my hometown in this capacity and I leave with mixed emotions. While there were some challenging years, I take great pride in knowing that I leave behind an office of highly trained municipal lawyers and support staff to assist the City toward a bright future," Sanchez said.

The City Charter gives the power of hiring the City Attorney to the city council. The council will conduct a nationwide search for Sanchez's replacement, the city said.
