Tied Up And Terrified; Crooks Use Zip Ties During Home Invasion

Posted: Updated:
FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

A pair of armed men broke into a Northwest Fresno home Tuesday morning, tying up the homeowner and her housekeeper.

"We've got two very shaken up people that we need to talk to," Lieutenant Burke Farrah, with the Fresno Police Department, said.

Police say the crooks got away with cash and other property. After they bolted, one of the victims was able to escape.

"Very random, especially in this area. It's very safe around here. You can see that it's real open," Cody Berg, who lives near the victims, said.

Fresno Police say, as soon as the woman was able to break free, she ran across the street to her neighbor's house to get help.

"We have a lot of folks in this community that are obviously concerned about their neighbors. This is a very nice neighborhood where people look out for each other and take care of each other," Farrah said.

"All these things that are going on in this area, we've had probably 20–30 car break–ins and a couple home invasions around here in the last year," Berg said.

Berg lives just down the street and knows the victims.

"I have no idea why they'd pick that particular house," he said.

It's a mystery police are trying to solve too.

They say this home invasion is not like the others.

"I can tell you that most of our home invasion robberies seem to have narcotics as a motive. That was not the case here. We'll be looking into the reasons as to why this house was selected and why these people were targeted," Farrah said.

As for neighbors like Cody, he says he only has one defense against intruders in his house.

"Loaded gun," he said.

Fresno police say they still aren't sure how the crooks got into the home and they have not released a description of them.

The woman who was sent to the hospital was expected to be treated and released.
