Teen Girl's Kidnapping A Hoax? Fresno Co. Deputies Investigate

FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

The reported kidnapping of a teenage girl by a man with a knife may not be that at all.

Fresno County sheriff's deputies say it started with a call from a 16-year-old girl at about 2:15 p.m. Monday saying she had been kidnapped while walking home from school.

But investigators tell KMPH News it appears the girl may have willingly gone with the man who picked her up.

Investigators say the teen girl first called and told deputies she had been forced into a silver Honda at knifepoint by a man in Central Fresno, near the intersection of Cedar and McKinley.

But they say she said he let her out at Highland and Butler after trying to sexually assault her.

That's near where deputies say they found her, and after tracking the license plate number of the car the girl gave them, police surrounded a house near Sanger where they found the car and the man.

But in a late development Monday night, detectives say they now believe the girl may have willingly gotten into the man's car and may not have been kidnapped.

The sheriff's office says it expects to release more information about this case on Tuesday.
