When Fresno State fired head football coach Pat Hill, a lot of fans wanted to see Jim McElwain take his place.
The former Bulldog assistant coach was coming off a second National Championship as offensive coordinator at Alabama.
And in at least one lengthy conversation with Fresno State, McElwain was very interested, even calling it his dream job.
But he never made contact again, and was hired by Colorado State, saying the school was more aggressive in its early pursuit.
McElwain built his Colorado State coaching staff with a couple of pieces from Fresno State, taking offensive line coach Derek Frazier and former Bulldog player and assistant Tim Skipper.
The Rams are 1-4 heading into their game against the Bulldogs Saturday. As it turned out, Fresno State may have gotten the better of the deal, landing Tim DeRuyter.
The Bulldogs are 16 point favorites in the game at Fort Collins.
