Train Crash Near Hanford: Track, Roads Back Open

Posted: Updated:
KINGS COUNTY, Calif. (KMPH) -

Trains and traffic are flowing again where an Amtrak train collided with a big rig and derailed Monday afternoon near Hanford.

A massive cleanup force worked through the night to get the stretch of track near Kansas and 10th avenues back online and open the nearby roads.

At 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, the first Amtrak train ran across the track, and the roads opened back up at 6:30 p.m.

California Highway Patrol officers say the driver of the big rig, identified as 32-year-old Macario Medina, of McFarland, drove his semi-truck through the railroad crossing and into the left side of the train.

The train derailed, the big rig overturned and dozens of people were hurt.

An Amtrak spokesperson says the crossing gate was down, lights were flashing and bells were ringing at the time of the crash.

CHP officers questioned the big rig's driver again on Tuesday. They say he doesn't remember much from the crash.
