Takeaways Fuel Turnaround For Fresno State

FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

What a difference a year has made for the defense at Fresno State.

Through the first five games last season, the Bulldogs had come up with five turnovers. This year's defense equaled that in just one game Saturday night.

Fresno State got two more interceptions for senior safety Phillip Thomas, who leads college football with five so far.

One year after finishing last with nine total takeaways, the Bulldogs now lead the nation with 16, and they've only played five games.

Fresno State's Andy Jennings has been named the Defensive Player of the Week in the Mountain West Conference after a career game against San Diego State.

The junior from Turlock had two quarterback sacks, three tackles for loss, and forced two fumbles. Both were recovered by the Bulldogs, leading to a pair of Fresno State touchdowns.

Junior quarterback Derek Carr is the MWC Offensive Player of the Week. Carr also had a career night, setting a school and conference record with 42 completions.

His 536 passing yards tied Fresno State's single game mark, and he finished with five touchdown passes.

The Bulldogs play the first of two straight road games Saturday night, taking on the 1-4 Colorado State Rams in Fort Collins.
