Football Teams Remember Fallen Edison Tiger

FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

Marquis Sutton was a senior at Edison High School and a football player with goals, dreams and a bright future.

Friday night, Sutton's former teammates put on their uniforms and tried to continue their season.

All have heavy hearts over the shooting death of their friend.

From the Tigers on the field, to the fans in the stands, tributes to 18-year-old Marquis Sutton could be seen everywhere.

Edison Head Football Coach Ricky Manning Jr. says, "We are coping with it, and we're going to move forward. We will never forget but moving forward."

Manning says once a Tiger always a Tiger, the rest of the season has now been dedicated to Sutton and what he stood for.

It was Monday night, police say the 18-year-old was shot and killed by a friend as they played a game of Russian roulette inside a central Fresno apartment.

Players wore Sutton's number 21 on their helmets with his initials "MS" as well.

Player Kevin Nutt says, "This whole week we've been dedicating it to him, making out the whole season to him. It's just hard."

Player Khari McGee says, "He is still a big part of this team, with or without his presence, it's rough right now."

In a show of support, prior to the game, the Clovis West Golden Eagles gave a bouquet of flowers and a check to Sutton's family to help with the funeral expenses.

A gesture that touched the hearts of all, including Sutton's grandmother, but Patricia Dixon says she still can't stop thinking about 20-year-old Terrance Tyrone Lee.

Dixon says Lee took her grandson away too soon.

Dixon says, "We have no hard feelings for the other boy or his family, but we still think justice should be done."

Lee pleaded not guilty Friday in Fresno County Superior Court.
