Young Door Knockers Deliver The Goods

FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

Seven hundred kids spent their Saturday knocking on doors in northeast Fresno. Their mission was to collect food for the less fortunate in Fresno County. The community service project was billed as Youth Impact Day.

Young people fanned out over a five mile radius from Clovis North High School. They asked homeowners in northeast Fresno to give food to restock the Community Food Bank's shelves.

Mark Koogler thinks Youth Impact Day is a good idea. "There are people out there that need the help.  I'm glad the kids are out there doing it, showing their willingness to go out and spend their Saturday doing that."

Kids doing the knocking found a lot of generous people in the Woodward Park area. Michelle Bell was more than willing to give. "I think it's great to be able to contribute and help with those who aren't as fortunate as we are."

Young people spent the morning knocking on doors. When people weren't home they left flyers to remind residents that the Community Food Bank is always in need of food. "It's so exciting and this is our inaugural event so we weren't sure how it was going to work.  But the community has really come forward."

After they finished knocking, they took their non–perishable items to a collection area. Judging by the SUVs and pickups that drove up, it was a very productive day. Saturday's goal was to collect 5–thousand dollars worth of food.
