FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

Fresno Police had to shoot and kill a dog they say was dangerous.

Shortly after 8:30 a.m. Monday, police and the SPCA got a call of a pit bull running through the neighborhood of Mariposa and Hedges in Central Fresno.

Officers say the dog was trying to chase kids and bite them while they were on their way to school.

An animal control officer tried to catch the dog but was bitten on the arm.

That's when two officers say they had to shoot and kill the dog before anyone else was hurt.

The animal control officer was taken to the hospital for treatment.
