College Night In Visalia: September 11

VISALIA, Calif. (KMPH) -

The Tulare County Office of Education's annual College Night will return to the Visalia Convention Center Tuesday, September 11.

Representatives from more than 85 universities and colleges will be in attendance to answer questions about entrance requirements, tuition and housing at their institutions.

Tulare County College Night is designed for high school students and parents who want to learn more about preparing for and applying to colleges. High school juniors and seniors and their parents will be given access to the event at 6:00 p.m. so that they can spend more time with the representatives.

Younger high school students and their parents will be admitted at 6:30 p.m. as in years past.

"The College Night committee does an outstanding job of bringing higher education resources to thousands of Tulare County students each year," says Tulare County Superintendent of Schools Jim Vidak. "The event is a great collaboration between parent volunteers, teachers, college representatives and community supporters."

In addition to the college representatives, students and parents can visit two sessions of informational presentations (beginning at 6:30 and 7:30 p.m.) on topics ranging from how to write an effective college essay and prerequisite courses to financial aid and athletic recruitment.

One presentation on financial aid and educational planning will be offered in Spanish.

Students will also be able to pick up instructions on applying for the annual Tulare County College Night Scholarship, which provides one student $1,000 per year for up to four years, based on academic and personal accomplishments. Applications will be available on-line through the College Night website in late September, or through Tulare County high school counselors. The application deadline for the College Night scholarship is February 1, 2013. Students and parents may also utilize the web site for links to university, financial aid and test preparation sites.

The Visalia Convention Center is located at 303 E. Acequia Avenue.
