Veterans Call Clovis Welcome Home Parade "Heartwarming"

CLOVIS, Calif. (KMPH) -

The welcome home parade had a two fold purpose. To thank veterans who served in the Middle East and to also congratulate Vietnam veterans for a job well done. Doug Hammer is a Vietnam veteran. "I've never been in a parade or to a parade celebrating veterans. It's been 40 years. It's about time."

Veterans rode in military vehicles, on motorcycles and also in fast cars. It was their moment and to many like Iraq veteran Angelica Capuchino it meant so much. "It kind of melts your heart a little bit. The feeling is so overwhelming. It means a lot."

The welcome home parade was intimate and lasted only thirty minutes. For Anna Hawkins, wife of a veteran still active in the Army she appreciated all the symbolism attached to the parade. "It's exceptionally challenging at times. But days like today make it worth it when you see people's appreciation for our family's sacrifices."

One of the organizers of the event, John Mulligan called it a huge success. "We thought it was great. We thought it was great. We think we accomplished our purpose."

Marti Nicely of Fresno hatched the idea back in March. Saturday's parade proved to be a heartwarming experience for hundreds of veterans who fought to keep us free.
