Valley Toxic Waste Dump Fined For Improper Disposal

KETTLEMAN CITY, Calif. (AP) - Federal officials are fining the operator of the largest toxic waste dump in the West nearly $10,000 for improper disposal near a community known for a rash of birth defects.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said Friday there is no evidence the violations pose a health threat to the community or workers at the Kettleman Hills facility in Kings County.

The agency said Chemical Waste Management, Inc. failed to analyze leachate - the liquid that drains from a landfill - for polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, before disposing it at the site. PCBs are toxic chemicals that have been linked to cancer.

In May, the company voluntarily disclosed that it did not follow proper procedures. Chemical Waste has been fined numerous times, most recently last year, for improperly disposing waste.
