2 Dead In Crash On Interstate 5 In Tejon Pass

GORMAN, Calif. (KMPH) -

A chain-reaction collision in the Grapevine stretch of Interstate 5 north of Los Angeles has killed a woman and a girl and injured nine others.

California Highway Patrol Lt. Craig Whitty says an SUV whose driver may have been heading back from the holiday weekend hit a guardrail shortly before 5 a.m. Tuesday. The woman and a 5- or 6-year-old girl were flung from the car and died at the scene.

Whitty says at least four other cars and a big-rig hit the SUV or each other or spun out trying to avoid the collisions.

Los Angeles County fire officials say four of the nine injured were in critical condition.

Whitty says three of the injured are children who were flown to hospitals.

All southbound lanes of the Grapevine were closed for several hours, causing a mile-long backup. All lanes were back open shortly after 11 a.m.
