Fresno State Student Dies After Night Of Drinking

Posted:
FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

A night of drinking turned deadly for a Fresno State student, who died Sunday morning at a Fresno hospital.

18-year-old Philip Dhanens was a freshman and was pledging to join the Theta Chi fraternity.

University officials say Dhanens was drinking at Theta Chi's frat house Saturday night.

Fresno state has suspended the fraternity, and Fresno police are investigating the death.

Members of the theta chi fraternity were tight lipped Sunday as news of the death of one of their pledges spread.

"It scares me honestly, it kind of freaks me out," said Jonathan Spenjamin, who is pledging for a different fraternity.

Other fraternity pledges on campus fear the incident will give all Greek organizations a bad rap.

"I feel like it's going to give me a bad rep walking around campus, like you're Greek, you're probably going to get drunk and die," said Spenjamin.

Fresno State officials say Dhanens, who is from Bakersfield, had just accepted an invitation to join the fraternity last week.

The university immediately banned Theta Chi as a recognized student organization.

The university released this statement: "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Philip at this incredibly sad time. We are heartbroken at the loss of this young man who had just joined our university community and had a life of promise ahead," said university president, John Welty.

Depending on the outcome of the investigation, the university can either put the Theta Chi fraternity on probation, suspend the group, or revoke their recognition as a Fresno State student organization altogether.

Individual students could also be punished.

This isn't the first fraternity-related drinking death at Fresno State in recent years.

In 2006, 19-year-old Danny Daniels died at the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity house, after several days of heavy drinking.

His blood alcohol level was more than four times the legal limit.

The fraternity was banned from the university for five years.
