Dusty William Lewis
FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -
A 31-year-old man was arrested Wednesday afternoon after a slow chase with deputies through Central Fresno, all while a baby sat in the backseat of his car.
The incident began shortly before 6 p.m. in the area of Palm and Lansing when a Fresno County sheriff's deputy tried to pull over Dusty William Lewis, of Fresno, for traffic violations.
The deputy said he turned on his emergency lights and siren and Lewis took off.
Deputies said Lewis pulled into a supermarket parking lot near Ashlan and West about five minutes later, got out of his car and ran inside the store. He was eventually taken into custody.
Afterwards, investigators found out that Lewis' 1-year-old daughter had been in the backseat the whole time. The child, who was not hurt, was turned over to her mother who had arrived on scene.
During the investigation, deputies said they found a loaded handgun and two large bags of hashish inside Lewis' car.
Authorities say Lewis is a registered sex offender who had just been discharged from parole for a rape charge.
Lewis was booked into the Fresno County Jail on charges of felony evading, being an ex-felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, willful cruelty to a child and several traffic-related charges.
According to the sheriff's office, Lewis' daughter turned 1 on Wednesday.
