Sex Education Program: ACLU Suing Clovis Unified

FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

Clovis Unified School District is being sued by the American Civil Liberties Union.

Late Tuesday morning, the Northern California chapter of the ACLU announced it is suing the district over a sex education program that it says is teaching abstinence-only education to high school students.

The lawsuit claims the current textbook being used in Clovis Unified high schools doesn't mention condoms at all.

Instead, for example, the lawsuit says the book teaches that unwanted pregnancies can be avoided by respecting yourself, getting plenty of rest and practicing abstinence.

The lawsuit also claims that additional materials compare a woman who is not a virgin to a "dirty shoe."

Clovis Unified representatives say they will not comment until they have a chance to review the lawsuit thoroughly.
