CLOVIS, Calif. (KMPH) -
Clovis residents say a local United States Post Office on Bullard and Minnewawa looks trashy with overgrown brush, and they're tired of it.
Several non-profit service groups even offered to clean up the grounds for free.
But the groups claim they were told to stay away because of liability issues and postal union officials would get upset.
Mailee Vang and others want the mess cleaned up.
Vang says, "Does the union have to know? It's just as simple as wanting to take care of the grounds. Its important to keep the place looking good for customers."
The U.S. Postal Service does admit they received a number of complaints from concerned citizens about the entire overgrown bush. But Postal Service employees say it's not their fault, because it contracts out with a custodial service. But some in the community say maybe it's time to reevaluate that contract.
I spoke with Richard Garcia, the U.S. Post Master for the Clovis area.
He says, "I appreciate the fact customers are proud of their city, and I agree the post office must be maintained. I'm currently accepting bids for a new permanent landscaping company."
But what about the service groups who wanted to clean it up now?
Garcia says he will contact government attorneys and see what can be done. But adds he doesn't have a problem with the idea as long as it's done on a Sunday when the post office is closed.
By the way, if any landscaping company would like to submit a bid to permanently clean up the grounds around the post office on Minnewawa and Bullard, contact Post Master Richard Garcia as soon as possible at (559) 297-9593.
