FRIANT, Calif. (KMPH) -
Mia "The Knockout" St. John spoiled Christy Martin's retirement party Tuesday night, winning the WBC Super Welterweight Championship in the long-awaited bout between rivals at Table Mountain.
Martin, now 44, said before the fight she expected to get her 50th career victory and then walk away from boxing.
Instead it was the 45-year-old St. John who won a unanimous decision, then announced her retirement.
At the end of the tenth and final round, Martin dropped her gloves and let St. John pound away with repeated punches to the face.
The judges scored it 96-94, 96-94 and 97-93 for St. John, who lost a unanimous decision to Martin in their only other fight ten years ago.
The victory gives St. John a career record of 46-11-2 with 18 knockouts.
Martin, generally regarded as the greatest female boxer of all time, ends her career with a record of 49-7-3 with 31 knockouts.
