FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -
Authorities say a man accused of scamming people out of thousands of dollars in Merced has been arrested in the South Valley.
Rey Martinez Lespier, 45, was taken into custody at a secluded cabin in the Three Rivers area in Tulare County Wednesday afternoon.
Merced Police say Lespier told people he could help them with their immigration status. They say he charged $3,000 for those services but never delivered on his promise.
Several tips from the community helped authorities locate Lespier.
Detectives say they recovered documents and computers from the cabin that may lead to identifying more victims as well as proving other financial crimes.
Lespier was booked into the Merced County Jail on suspicion of grand theft and theft by false pretense.
Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the Merced Police Department at (209) 385-4725.
