250-Pound Black Bear Frightens Couple At Bass Lake Shoreline

BASS LAKE, Calif. (KMPH) -

The hot weather is bringing out the wildlife.

More people are going camping, with lots of food, and park rangers say that's making the bears very active.

The latest sighting was a 250-pound black bear on the shoreline of Bass Lake near Falls Beach.

Lori Taylor and her husband Bob spotted it early Monday morning.

Bob was cooking up some ribs on the barbeque when they were greeted by a black bear.

Bob Taylor says, "Kind of a cinnamon color with a white chest that went down in v–shape, he was a good looking bear as far as bears go. But he didn't get my ribs."

Witnesses say the bear stopped at least one couple from entering their cabin, but it finally moved on.

Deputies were called but couldn't find it. But they did alert the boat patrol in the area.

Locals say it's very usual to see a bear this low. But several of them say they had their trash cans knocked over by the bear as it was looking for food.

Cory Valdez says, "He was out looking for something and he came walking by, and we all came out and watched him. It was pretty cool."

Although any bear should be considered dangerous, park rangers say the biggest threat to bears and other wildlife are drivers.

Each year a number of bears are hit by vehicles from drivers traveling too fast.
