Sewage Spill: Public Is Safe, Reedley Officials Say

REEDLEY, Calif. (KMPH) -

Reedley officials held a news conference Wednesday afternoon to provide more details about the raw sewage spill from earlier this week.

A malfunction Monday night caused anywhere from 6,000 to 63,000 gallons of sewage to spill from the Reedley Wastewater Treatment Plant, Waste Management Superintendent Martha Cardoso said.

Approximately 3/4 of the sewage did not make it into the Kings River because it was captured in an emergency pond, Cardoso said. It was then discharged back to the plant so the water could be treated.

Cardoso said the spill did not endanger the health of anyone swimming in and around Reedley Beach because the plant is located south of the area. She added that the public is safe.

City Manager Nicole Zieba stressed that Reedley's drinking water was not affected by the spill.

On Tuesday, Tulare County health officials posted warning signs around the river, and advised people to stay out of the water.

Results from water sample tests should be available later this week.
