FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -
Rates of depression have skyrocketed among girls going through adolescence.
A government survey assessed drug use and mental health in girls between the ages of 12 and 17.
Those girls had triple the risk of a major depressive episode when compared to boys of the same age.
The survey states nearly a million and a half girls reported a major depressive episode in the past year.
According to the report, the risk of depression grows with age.
Only five percent of 12 year olds reported suffering a depressive episode in the past year.
But by the time girls turned 15, that number went up to 15 percent.
