FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

Just days after a driver plowed into a family in north Fresno, killing a little boy, friends of that family are trying to raise money.

Donovan Maldonado's tragic death touched the hearts of many across the Valley.

Police say the driver dragged the little boy several hundred feet and it eventually killed him.

The boy's father and sister were also hit and are hurt.

Now many are doing what they can to help the family financially.

Friends and neighbors hit the street to collect money just a feet away from where that deadly accident happened.

Paris Turner says, "We just woke up this morning and felt helpless so we needed to start this today."

Reporter: "And it's helping for you guys?"

Turner says, "Yes, I just get happy when people stop by."

Annette Turner says "Maria and Jesse have always been there for the community and for other children in and out of their homes; including myself for my child we love them."

At Jesse's work the PG&E call center in downtown Fresno, workers have decided to donate their vacation time all in an effort to have Jesse heal and be with his family.

Meanwhile, 42-year-old Loren Lebeau, the Central High boy's varsity basketball coach who was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving and vehicular manslaughter, remains out on bail.

Neighbors who live near Lebeau's southeast Fresno home say since the accident he's pretty much stayed indoors.

Those who donated to the Maldonado fund say the death of 7-year-old Donovan never should have happened.

Nine Mast says, "It's just a tragedy, a young life taken for something so senseless.
