FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

The body of a Bay Area man who went missing while hiking one of the highest peaks in the Sierra Nevada has been found, officials said.

Search and rescue crews located the body of 31-year-old Thomas Heng, of San Rafael, in Inyo National Forest, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks spokeswoman Dana Dierkes said in a news release Wednesday night.

The last time anyone saw Heng alive was around 1 p.m. Sunday while he was on a day hike to Mount Langley, Dierkes said.

Mount Langley is located on the crest of the Sierra Nevada, between Inyo and Tulare counties.

Crews from several local law enforcement agencies and search and rescue groups helped look for Heng.

The case remains under investigation.

Friends say Heng hosted many hikes all over California with the group "Bay Area Anything Active."

The hiking group's founder -- Christopher Isar -- issued this statement to KMPH News Thursday morning: "Tom and I became close friends very quickly. He inspired so many in our group to do so much. I miss him more than words can say."
