A 7-year-old boy who was hit in a suspected DUI crash Wednesday night has died.
The boy has been identified as Donovan Maldonado.
Fresno Police say 42-year-old Loren LeBeau -- a Central High School basketball coach -- drove drunk into a group of people riding their bikes in Northeast Fresno, near Shepherd and Millbrook, at about 9 p.m.
Witnesses say LeBeau hit Donovan, who was riding his own bike, and a man and a 2-year-old girl on another bike.
Police say LeBeau took off, but returned minutes later.
The three who were hit were taken to the hospital, but Donovan died just before 4 a.m. Thursday. The 2-year-old girl is in very bad shape, while the man was last listed in stable condition.
Officers say LeBeau failed a sobriety test, and as a result was arrested and booked into the Fresno County Jail on a lengthy list of counts -- including driving under the influence and hit and run. He bailed out of jail around 11 a.m. Thursday.
LeBeau is well-known in the local sports scene. He is the head boys basketball coach at Central High School, where he is also a physical education teacher. He was placed on paid-administrative leave Thursday morning.
Central Unified Superintendent Mike Berg told reporters during a news conference that LeBeau is an "intense individual, and cares a great deal about kids."
Berg added that the school district will be making school psychologists available to any students and staff who would like to talk about the incident.
KMPH News has learned that Donovan Maldonado would have been a second grader this fall at Liberty Elementary School in Clovis.
