Hanford Cheerleading Camp Scam; 3 Arrested

Posted:
HANFORD, Calif. (KMPH) -

A teenage girl and her parents were arrested Sunday in Hanford in connection with a high school scam.

Police say the 14-year-old girl had been going door to door in the area of Fairmont and Redwood asking for donations so she could go to Hanford High's cheerleading camp.

When Hanford Police talked with the girl, they say she gave them a false name but eventually admitted both her mother and stepfather were in on the scam.

Police say the money was actually going to be used to buy school clothes.

The girl was taken to juvenile hall, and her six-year-old brother was turned over to Child Protective Services. Their parents were booked into the Kings County Jail.

Police say the family was given hundreds of dollars.

Anyone who was a victim of the scam is asked to call the Hanford Police Department at (559) 585-2535.
