Missing Hikers Found Near Tehipite Valley

FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KMPH) -

The Fresno County Sheriff's Office says a father and son who disappeared while hiking near Wishon Lake have been found safe.

The 51-year-old man and his 13-year-old son were on a six-day hike on the Rancheria Trail when they got lost.

Rescuers spotted the hikers in Tehipite Valley around 6:30 p.m. Sunday, but they weren't able to get to the pair due to the terrain and lack of communication.

A helicopter was brought in Monday morning. Both hikers were flown out of the area and reunited with family members at Wishon Dam.

Other than some scratches and poison oak, the father and son were doing okay, the sheriff's office said.

Deputies say the hikers didn't have a cell phone but had made plans with family members to call authorities if they were not heard from by a specific date and time.

About 35 search and rescue personnel helped with the search.
