COALINGA, Calif. (KMPH) -

Investigators say a fire that destroyed two homes in Coalinga early Monday morning was a case of arson.

It happened around 2 a.m. on Coolidge and Pine.

The Coalinga Fire Department says the family of three was inside the home when they smelled smoke and ran out.

A fence was on fire, and the flames quickly spread to two homes.

Cal Fire and Fresno County firefighters helped knock down the fire.

Firefighters say an hour later, someone started a fire in a nearby creek bed. Crews were able to put out that fire as well.

Damage is estimated at $200,000.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Coalinga Fire Department at (559) 935-1652.
