Fresh And Tasty At Fresno State Farm Market Festival

FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

Once a year Fresno State puts on display what it produces down on the farm. You can start with wine, add a heaping plate of vegetables, toss in some fruit and don't forget the ice cream.

There were plenty of things to taste including corn and sausage fresh off the grill at the sixth annual Fresno State Farm Market Festival on campus.

A tour of the farm gave guests a chance to see the vegetables and a few berries up close. Student field manager Gary Cannon says they grow four different kinds of squash at Fresno State. "Because it's organic, things are done a bit differently. Our focus isn't weeding like a lot of conventional farms instead our focus is the plants. We're growing them as natural as possible with natural fertilizers like fish emulsion."

Lorna Daniels, shops daily at the Fresno State farm market. After taking the tour she decided to sign up as a volunteer. "My plan is to get out here with Gary. Get out in the hot sun and dig up the dirt, plant stuff and put it back into the community."

In less than six months the Gibson Farm Market on campus will have a new building. Store manager Jesse Silva says it's going to be built next to the old store. "The new market is gonna offer ice cream scooping. There's gonna be a patio. It's gonna be a better place for us to display our products. More customer friendly."

Everything in the store is produced by Fresno State students.
