Wish Comes True For Madera Girl With Brain Tumor

MADERA, Calif. (KMPH) -

A 6–year–old Madera girl found out that wishes do come true.

All little Deztiny wanted was her very own play house.

A team of firefighters were more than happy to build one for the girl, who has spent much of her life battling brain cancer.

"She was diagnosed when she was about two for brain tumor...so she got it removed at Central Valley Children's Hospital and was sent for radiation at San Francisco," said Cecilia Belmontes, Deztiny's mother.

She's had four surgeries so far to remove the tumor.

More than a dozen firefighters with the Madera County Fire Department volunteered their time to build a two–story play house and swing set in Deztiny's backyard.

"We want to fulfill that dream. A lot of our personnel here are off duty, and volunteering their own free time. There's probably six of us on duty but the rest are here on their own time, wanting to help out," said Mike Gomez with the Madera County Fire Department.

"It's really hot, they're doing a great job, an amazing job, and we're really thankful to them too," said Belmontes.

But the firefighters know working in the heat is nothing, compared to Deztiny's battle to become a cancer survivor.

"She's still getting checked at Valley Children's every four months, just to make sure she doesn't have a reoccurring tumor," said Belmontes.

She has one more wish... for doctors to declare Deztiny's cancer to be declared in remission.

"They haven't specifically said that yet. We're waiting for that," said Belmontes.

Deztiny's wish was made possible through the Make–A–Wish Foundation.

That two–story play set was donated by United Health Care.
