Dog Gone: Fireworks To Blame

Posted:
KINGSBURG, Calif. (KMPH) -

Did Wednesday night's fireworks frighten your dog so bad it ran away? At a Kingsburg dog shelter there was one new addition who apparently left home in the middle of the fireworks show.

No dog tags and no microchip and still unaccounted for. Marilyn Lofgren got lots of calls from dog owners with missing pets. Sadly it's common for most shelters the day after the Fourth of July.

He's nameless and homeless. But he appears to be adjusting to his temporary digs in Kingsburg. Lofgren is the owner of Proud no–kill shelter in Kingsburg. Her phone has been very busy the day after the fourth. "I've already gotten phone calls today about people losing their dogs. Unfortunately this dog has been the only one that I have gotten in my possession. The other ones are still lost."

Lost dogs are only a small part of what Lofgren deals with daily. Her shelter on a five acre lot is home to 125 dogs of all kinds. She relies on donations to keep her dogs fed.

Two weeks ago a Bay Area family came knocking. Their landlord told them their dog Lucky had to go. But Kim Shaw says they couldn't find a shelter to take Lucky. "He was a part of our family for five years. And we just didn't feel it was right to give up on something that you loved and cared for. It teaches our daughter Hannah when something is worth it to fight for it."

Marilyn Lofgren never met a dog she didn't like. But when she opened the no-kill shelter years ago she considered a full house would be 50 dogs not 125. With a little luck she'll soon have one less mouth to feed. "We'll give it some time and keep looking for his home. Call the police station to see if anybody's called in there. Try to get him back to his home."

If you recognize the lost black dog here's the web site that will get you in touch with Marilyn Lofgren. It is prouddogs.org
