Commissioner Welcomes Fresno State To MWC

Posted:
FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

After 20 years in the Western Athletic Conference, Fresno State now begins a new era as one of the newest members of the Mountain West.

MWC Commissioner Craig Thompson likes the addition of Fresno State because of its well rounded athletic programs. The Bulldogs will field teams in all 18 of the league's sanctioned sports.

There is also the familiarity factor. Fresno State will be competing against the likes of New Mexico, Las Vegas, Air Force, Colorado State and Wyoming, all schools the Bulldogs have faced in the past.

Several other WAC schools have also joined, or will be joining, the Mountain West. Hawaii, for football only, joins with Nevada and Fresno State.

San Jose State and Utah State will be in one year from now.

Fresno State's first competition in the new conference will be on September 20th in volleyball against Boise State.

The Bulldogs' first Mountain West game in football will be on September 29th against San Diego State.

Unfortunately, the Aztecs and Boise State are both leaving for the Big East.
