U.S. Census Surveyors Bombard Couple Who Declines Survey

FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

When is no, not good enough?

Apparently when you're dealing with the U.S. Census Bureau, KMPH Photojournalist, Alex Aguirre and his wife have been bombarded, not by telemarketers, but by surveyors.

In the past month, they've visited his house at least a half a dozen times asking him personal private information.

Alex Aguirre says, "Questions like, where she went to work, how long she worked there, and how much money she made."

That's when Alex told the surveyor good bye and hung up the phone.

Alex thought that was the end of it, then about a month later he got a knock on the door from another survey taker.

Alex said, "We already talked to someone on the phone and said we don't want to participate. She said these questions are very important. I don't doubt it, but these questions are very personal."

Around 9 o'clock at night another surveyor knocked on the door.

Alex said, "Then the following day another survey worker was standing outside my apartment. She told me she had 34 questions to ask me."

Reporter Erik Rosales called U.S. Census Bureau and spoke to information services specialist Jerry Wong.

Wong told Erik he admits a current Population Survey is taking place in the Valley.

But Wong said, "We are persistent to get the information, because that individual household represents about 2,000 households, and the quality of the data can not be diminished."

He adds, "A survey supervisor will make the determination on whether to go back again, again, and again."

Alex says, "Enough is enough. I'm sure the Census Bureau has a job to do, but they are going to be trying really hard to get your answers, and some people may show up at your house at 9 o'clock at night and bother you. If you tell them no, I don't know if they are going to leave you alone."
