MARIPOSA COUNTY, Calif. (KMPH) -
What was supposed to be a happy day on the Merced River turned tragic Friday when a father drowned after saving his little girl.
As Dan Tucker with KMPH's Mariposa and Yosemite Bureau at the Mariposa Gazette reports, it happened just after 4 p.m. at the Briceburg Bridge outside of Yosemite National Park.
Firefighters tried to revive the man who witnesses say dove into the water after seeing his daughter struggle then go under. But after she popped back up, he did not.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not yet been released.
Authorities say although rivers can look calm and peaceful this time of year, they can still be deadly.
