VISALIA, Calif. (KMPH) -

Things are back to normal in one Visalia neighborhood after police say a man exchanged gunfire with an officer, leading to a standoff.

Visalia Police say 48-year-old Johnny Lyn Bolen called 911 Tuesday and asked someone to come by and check on him at a home near Garden and Sunnyside.

When a police officer arrived, Bolen fired at the officer, and the officer shot back, said Sgt. Amy Watkins, spokeswoman for the police department.

Police say Bolen was hit by gunfire.

At one point, gas was leaking from the house.

After about two hours, police were able to convince Bolen to come out and surrender, Sgt. Watkins said. He was taken to Kaweah Delta Medical Center in very bad shape.

The officer was not hurt.
